We had such a powerful Back to Basics meeting this week focused on one simple but life-changing truth: Be still.
Life doesn’t slow down. There’s always something to do—someone to help, a problem to solve, a deadline to meet. But sometimes, if we’re honest, we keep ourselves busy on purpose so we don’t have to face the issues within us. We avoid the quiet because we know the quiet will bring up the pain, the disappointment, the anger, or the things we’ve tried to bury. We push it off again and again—because sitting with it might mean taking responsibility, or feeling something we’d rather ignore.
At our gathering, I shared an illustration: imagine carrying a backpack. Every time we experience something difficult—anger, jealousy, fear, guilt—we just toss it in the bag. We don’t deal with it, we just keep going. But that backpack gets heavy. Over time, it starts to weigh us down in ways we don’t even realize.
God never asked us to carry all that. He said, “Be still and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10). When we finally stop—when we’re not talking, not asking, not planning—just being before Him, something shifts.
One by one, we begin to unpack the weight. We lay it at His feet. And as we release each burden, God fills those empty places with His Spirit. Peace. Joy. Healing. The fruits of His Spirit begin to grow again where heaviness once lived.
Stillness isn’t weakness. It’s surrender. And it’s in that surrender that true healing begins.
This week, give yourself permission to stop, be still, and let God unpack your heart.
He has great plans for you!
